At Livingston Classical Academy, we strive to offer our students a learning experience rooted in what is best - the best literature ever written, the best artwork ever created, the best ideas ever discovered. We do so in the conviction that this encounter will elicit what is best in the children who experience it, that by studying the great works and great achievements of our civilization, young people will grow to become more thoughtful, more civic-minded, and more virtuous.
Our goal then is not merely to form good students, but good people. We prepare children to be morally responsible members of the community, capable of enhancing the lives of others through their own developed character and understanding. A student body so formed is certainly ready for success in college and the workplace. But we aspire to something broader. We want to prepare our students for the totality of life that lies ahead of them. We aim to shape them into men and women for all seasons; citizens and family-members and neighbors competent to navigate all the trials of life with confidence.
In setting such goals for our students, we are obviously setting very high expectations for them. A genuinely classical education is one that entails many challenges along the way. There are Latin declensions to be memorized, binomial equations to be solved, complex works of literature to be read and interpreted. There are the demands of citizenship in a community of learners that must be met. But at LCA, we do not shy away from asking our students to do difficult things, convinced as we are that truth and goodness are only attained through labor, and that maturity arises in a mind aware of its own ability to overcome adversity. At the end of their course of study with us, our hope is that our graduates will enter into the world brimming with self-confidence, and a readiness to take on everything that lies ahead.
In this work, we are reliant upon the efforts of our parents, who strive to instill the same virtuous habits at home that we seek to cultivate in the school building. Families who enroll their children at LCA enter into a partnership with the school. We pledge to honor their commitment to raising principled, conscientious children, and ask in turn for their support as we build upon the foundations they have laid. Towards this end, we encourage our families to learn more about the classical approach to education. As parents learn more about this venerable approach to schooling, we are confident they will be eager to join with us in providing its full fruits to their children.
